However, our non-metric multidimensional scaling of autosomal SNPs from previous genome-wide association studies gives us no reason to believe that there was a systematic diff erence in the distribution of any autosomal SNPs between carriers of haplogroup I and all other lineages (supplementary fi gure 1). Additionally, the genotype distribution of rs579459 (an ABO locus SNP associated with CAD in previous genome-wide association studies) was similar between men with haplogroup I and other lineages of the Y chromosome in our analysis (supplementary table 4). Laure Case and colleagues provide an important evolutionary perspective to our fi ndings. The series of studies in fruit fl ies and rodents clearly shows that the Y chromosome is an important regulator of immunity and a potential contributor to autoimmune diseases in experimental models. The question as to whether the eff ect of the Y chromosome on cardiovascular disease is mediated by its euchromatin (through proteincoding genes), its heterochromatin (through epigenetic mechanism), or a combination of both is intriguing and requires further studies.

Regenerative potential of cardiosphere-derived cells expanded from percutaneous endomyocardial biopsy specimens.
BACKGROUND Ex vivo expansion of resident cardiac stem cells, followed by delivery to the heart, may favor regeneration and functional improvement. METHODS AND RESULTS Percutaneous endomyocardial biopsy specimens grown in primary culture developed multicellular clusters known as cardiospheres, which were plated to yield cardiosphere-derived cells (CDCs). CDCs from human biopsy specimens and fr...
متن کاملExosomes Secreted by Normoxic and Hypoxic Cardiosphere-derived Cells Have Anti-apoptotic Effect
Cardiosphere-derived cells (CDCs) have emerged as one of the most promising stem cell types for cardiac protection and repair. Exosomes are required for the regenerative effects of human CDCs and mimic the cardioprotective benefits of CDCs such as anti-apoptotic effect in animal myocardial infarction (MI) models. Here we aimed to investigate the anti-apoptotic effect of the hypoxic and normoxic...

II. Aetna considers autologous intra‐coronary mononuclear bone marrow cell transplantation or intra‐coronary administration of cardiosphere‐derived cells experimental and investigational for members with myocardial infarction and for all other cardiac diseases (e.g., chronic heart failure) because its effectiveness for these indications has not been established. متن کاملIntegrin β‐3 is required for the attachment, retention and therapeutic benefits of human cardiospheres in myocardial infarction
Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading causes of death worldwide. Stem cell therapy offers a promising option to regenerate injured myocardium. Among the various types of stem cells, cardiosphere cells represent a mixture of intrinsic heart stem cells and supporting cells. The safety and efficacy of cardiosphere cells have been demonstrated in recent clinical trials. Cell-matrix interaction...
متن کاملGlobal Intracoronary Infusion of Allogeneic Cardiosphere-Derived Cells Improves Ventricular Function and Stimulates Endogenous Myocyte Regeneration throughout the Heart in Swine with Hibernating Myocardium
BACKGROUND Cardiosphere-derived cells (CDCs) improve ventricular function and reduce fibrotic volume when administered via an infarct-related artery using the "stop-flow" technique. Unfortunately, myocyte loss and dysfunction occur globally in many patients with ischemic and non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, necessitating an approach to distribute CDCs throughout the entire heart. We therefore deter...
